Whirlpool Gas Dryer Repair and Troubleshooting

Many people who own Whirlpool dryers, especially the Whirlpool gas dryer quite often seem to experience some difficulties after few years of continuous use. This repair guide will address the three most commonly found issues when troubleshooting Whirlpool gas clothes dryers at home.

How to Fix a Whirlpool Gas Dryer Won't Spin Problem

If your clothes dryer is not turning then you might have had a big problem. There are few causes which prevent the dryer from spinning. Most of the time, people either have problems with the belt, the motor or the door switch.

Dryer Belt - check your drive belt and see if the idler pulley is in place and working properly. Quite often, the wearing of pulley belt after frequent use may stop the drum from rotating freely.

Dryer Motor - problems with motors are usually involve two type or repairing - either the motor itself has burned out and stopped working or there are obstacles in the way of the roller or pulley. To check this, you can turn the Whirlpool dryer on and observe carefully if you hear the humming sound from the motor. There two types of humming sounds - when the motor hums but doesn't spin, and one where the motor is trying to spin, but can not. The former is when your dryer motor is dead and you probably have to replace it with new one. While the later maybe due to mechanical problems in your Whirlpool gas dryer parts, such as roller, idler pulley or clothes drum.

To determine whether your gas dryer motor is broken, you need to take out the dryer belt while keeping the blower in place. If you can rotate it freely by hand than it means either you have to replace the motor or buy new start capacitors.

Door Switch - figure how to open your Whirlpool gas dryer front or top housing to locate the door switch. If it is defective, you will have to buy replacement parts.

Why Whirlpool Gas Dryer Doesn't Get Hot?

If your gas clothes dryer is taking too long to finish its drying cycle, below are two quick dryer troubleshooting you can do:

  1. Heating Element - one of the major causes of not getting enough heat for your gas tumble dry is because of the mal-functioning dryer heating element. Low heat temperature can be indication of partly burned out heating element and in which case it will have to be replaced.
  2. Dryer Venting - another possible situation might come from blocked vent duct. Lint or dusts may block hot heat from moving through the gas dryer to the clothes drum. Fortunately, this problem is easy to fix, just open your dryers housing, and vent Whirlpool gas dryer filter duct with either vacuum cleaner or a blower.

When Gas Dryer Has No Heat At All?

This problem may be associated with the igniter, thermal fuse or the gas valve coil.

  1. Thermal fuse in dryer detects the heating temperature and blows out when it too hot or when your Whirlpool dryer overheats. When blown, your dryer may not work at all, so make a point to check your venting system first, and see if the thermal fuse is still connected. You can find this part in the exhaust duct.
  2. Igniters - Many modern Whirlpool Duet gas dryer models have integrated electric igniters for easy and fast lighting. However, after few years of use, customers often find their igniter worn out and it stops producing that bright orange glow compared to when it was new. If this happens in your Whirlpool clothes dryer, it won’t burn any gas at all. This part can be found near the front bottom of dryer housing. It can be anywhere from one to two inches long and attached to the end of burning gas tube.
  3. Gas Valve Coil - If the igniter seems to produce fine glows, but there is still no gas ignition, it might be due to the gas coil not working correctly, and thus the gas valve will not open. In this case, it is best to replace gas coil in Whirlpool dryer just to make sure you don’t miss out on any important elements, because this part is really cheap to replace.
